The Office of National Statistics maintains a series of codes that each represent a geographical area in the UK. These codes known as ONS codes changed in January 2011, replaced by the new GSS codes. Here we provide a free lookup or translation table between the GSS and ONS coding systems.
The older ONS code represented an administrative county, district, unitary authority and ward. The current nine digit system now replaces this former six digit system. Now the first three digits indicate the level of geography and the next six digits identity an individual unit area.
The data is supplied in Excel.
